The importance of koliva:
The important idea in most cases seems to be that the memorial food is some sort of grain, sweetened, and distributed to all in attendance. The grain recalls Jesus' reference to His own death and resurrection: "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit." John 12:24
